Dr. Robert N. Barger was presented the Antarctica Service Medal by CAP National Vice Commander Brig. Gen. Edward Phelka on May 15, 2021, in South Bend, Indiana. As a 17-year-old Cadet Major in the Civil Air Patrol, Cadet Barger was selected as the official CAP participant in Operation Deep Freeze II. Operation Deep Freeze II was a year-long US-Navy led operation to Antarctica and the South Pole where Cadet Barger would serve as a working member of the 80-person team operating the C-124 Globemaster.
From October 1956 until February 1957, Dr. Barger managed to: Be a crewmember of the first US Air Force aircraft to fly over the south pole, Be the first teenager to fly over the south pole, Be the first person to celebrate an 18th birthday in Antarctica, Be the first Catholic to serve as an altar boy in Antarctica.
